Description

The first of the two entries for the Greeks Contest at :iconmanipulatethis: Level 2
I'm probably not 100% finished with this, since I'm pretty sure the shadows could use work still. I wanted to upload it though since I've got several pieces I've been working on consectuvely, including another entry to this contest, and I wanted to get something at least "semi-finished." Despite some obvious flaws I really like how this turned out,at least on my other computer. I get a feeling it will be a different shade on this monitor. Combining the two backgrounds was a LOT of work (all of those little swirls in the pavilion to get around, you know,) but I really like the look. I think there's some good work in this piece and the beginning of some more comprehensible lighting. I was trying to stay away from the fantasy aspect on this piece, oh well :) Enjoy ! Please feel free to critique.

EDIT: I've worked with the shadow on the vase a bit, hopefully that will help.

This is very well done!!

The intricacy of the scene is breathtaking and keeps your eye drawn to the piece! Nice work!

I do have a few suggestions though, if you'll have them:)

-First, the vase looks good and the shadow you've added definitely helps to ground it to the scene. The only thing is...the shadow doesn't really match the others in the gazebo. If you could re-align the shadow so it matches the other shadows from the columns, it wouldn't draw as much attention to the vase and I think would make it looks much better :) Also, speaking of shadows, be careful of the direction of the natural and pre-existing lighting of a scene before you edit it. The lighting on the gazebo would suggest a light source from the viewer, but your shadows suggest a light source from behind. If you have the time and patience, and could flip the shadows, I think it would make a big improvement on the realism and this scene :)

-Second, the gazebo itself looks great, but there are a few spots where the edges look blurry or in some cases a little distorted due to cropping. Always try to get the edges clean and uniform when cropping images, especially in high-contrast areas like the backside of the gazebo/pavillion. If you have the time, try looking for imperfections in the darker areas of the roof and use the Smudge or Clone tools to cover them up - this will draw less attention to them which will mean more attention is focused on the rest of the scene:)

-Finally, I noticed one thing that is missing from this scene. When doing anything with water there is one thing you have to remember: reflections. There is a very faint reflection around the base of the pavillion, but if you could add a bit more, I think it would add a lot more realism to the scene:)

I apologize for sounding harsh or offending in my critique, it always seems to come out that way but it was not my intention at all. The really is a fantastic work, and the detail you put into it is fantastic!

Best of luck for the Challenge!
